Why is the viola so good?

Stores and transports like a canoe (75lbs hull) but sails like a good dinghy.

Balance lug for on water reefing, or modern squaretop laminate sails

Three Rig Choices for the Viola Sailing Canoe Kit

If you have questions about the Viola 14 Sailing Canoe in General, the builders and sailors hang out on the Storer Boat Plans Facebook Page. Lots of useful information for considering a build or if you want

The Viola 14 Sailing Canoe comes with three rig options. Most will choose either the 6.3m Lug Rig which allows easy reefing for distance sailing and RAID events or the 4.7 or 5.4sqm Laminate sails

Joost Engelen the first builder, has all three sails and finds the Lug Rig is best for the RAID events. But the 4.7m and 5.4sqm options are best for family picnics.

However, Speed Freaks will like the 6m laminate square top sail. Almost as much sail area as a Laser on a much narrower, but better behaved hull :)

Below 6.3m Lug, 5.0m squaretop, 6m squaretop.

  1. I’m considering building the Viola from scratch (maybe a kit). I have built several sailing canoe conversions, many sailing dories, and SCAMP #24 (my go to favorite watercraft ever!). At age 71 the Viola looks like a take anywhere little sailboat (on the top of the RV). I built my SCAMP as a standing lug ketch (two 50 sq.ft sails) which I love much more than the design rig (Wesley might disagree!) I would think that one of the mast/sail rigs (cut-down break-apart windsurfer spars) may do double duty on the Viola (rig folds to 7′ long) Does this seem OK to you?

  2. Hi Johnny,

The windsurf mast will be too weak and flexible for the Viola Canoe.

It is possible to experiment of course.

  3. Hi Chris, Please contact us directly. There are quite a few options.

Do you want just the Plywood precut, or the timber, Spars, Sails.

The kits are pretty customised to please email us direct.

  4. Please give me an idea of total price to receive a complete kit to my address in Massachusetts (Cape Cod). I would like the complete kit. I have experience with building an wooden Opti dinghy, but no other boat building experience.

  5. Good evening, Please tell me the what documentation comes along with the kit. Should I purchase the plans as well or will that be provided with the kit.

    Thank you

  6. HI Richard,

You can purchase the plans separately from Duckworks. Or we can supply the plans with the kit.

    Michael
