The Kombi Sailing Canoe is excellent for sailing and paddling. It is a classic, lightweight 50/50 canoe. It is designed for sparkling sailing performance as the hullshape is derived from the stable and fast Viola Sailing Canoe. But it’s narrower for good paddling with two adults. Also it carries gear for a weekend.
It should be a pretty awesome sailing boat with one sailor aboard if they sail actively in the middle section of the canoe. Or chill cruising with two aboard on the seats.
The lug rig can be raised or lowered afloat or ashore and can be reefed for stronger winds or more relaxed sailing.
Length is 16ft, beam is 35″. And built of 4mm gaboon/okoume plywood the hull weight is 55lb (Recommended).
We were very happy with the acceleration in moderate gusts and the very clean wake. And the flattened aft sections mean it is less twitchy than a pure paddling canoe shape with the wind behind.

Design background for the Kombi 50/50 plywood canoe kit
The Kombi is a 5 panel stitch and glue boat. All components are precut and the plans can be included if you have not purchased a set already. The plans are very detailed and step by step.
There is also support from the Storer Boat Plans facebook group where several people have built the KOMBI and are starting to sail and paddle.
After designing the Viola Canoe and seeing the excellent all round performance available from having a canoe type entry and a flattened dinghy style hull exit we started thinking about a boat for two people that would be easier to paddle. The Viola is too wide at 40″ beam.
So the decision was to make the Kombi look like a canoe in every way. It had to have the empty stripped out look of a good paddling canoe. However, we considered several buoyancy options for different use types. Here are the side buoyancy cushions – details of how to make them in the plan.
We worked hard to make it just look like a canoe. But with quite a different hullform and minimal non obtrusive mast supports and a small above water transom to make hanging the rudder a lot easier.

This was the first video we saw of the Kombi in sailing mode. This is a first launching showing the boat slipping along on a reach and run, a relaxed gybe and then stalled going upwind.
